Makeup Vanities - A Blast From The Past

If you were to visit the bedrooms of your mother, grandmother, or even great-grandmother, they probably contained makeup vanities in the most popular style of the day.  In years past, makeup vanities were purchased as part as a bedroom suite, along with beds, dressers, chests, and bedside tables.  Furthermore, a makeup vanity came with a matching mirror and bench or other manner of seating.  As individuals started turning away from purchasing bedroom suites, the makeup vanity almost disappeared, although they were still popular with furniture companies that produced items for children’s bedrooms.

Multi-Purposing Your Makeup Vanity

Whether you have inherited a beautiful makeup vanity from a family member or have purchased a particularly stunning piece of furniture, consider making the piece serve many functions.  Most individuals choose to not include makeup vanities in their design plan simply because they may not need a specific spot to apply makeup.  However, by multi-purposing your makeup vanity, you can breathe new life into a stale piece of furniture.  In addition to serving as a storage spot for your cosmetics and a place to apply your makeup, consider turning a vanity into a writing desk.  Use a makeup vanity as a place to complete your correspondence, pay bills, or just write in a journal.

If you do plan to use your makeup vanity for applying cosmetics, be sure to situate the piece near a source of proper lighting.  If possible, use natural light from a window to provide a more appropriate look or install a lighting system that uses natural light bulbs.
