Antique Vanity - Make Your Own

These days, an antique vanity is one of the hottest items in bathroom design.  From antique furniture converted into a vanity to modern creations that are made to look old but function new, these fantastic vanities are great additions to any bathroom.  Whether you are looking to recreate a historic bathroom or create a unique blend of old and new, antique bathroom vanities are just the ticket.  For an especially unique touch, consider creating your own antique vanity for a fraction of the cost of purchasing a pre-made vanity.

Find, Modify, and Install

The first step in creating any antique vanity is to first find an antique cabinet of suitable height and size for turning into a vanity.  The easiest way to modify a preexisting piece of furniture to accommodate a sink is to mount a vessel sink.  These sinks mount on top of the surface of the cabinet, requiring you to only drill a small hole for the drain pipes.  This is a great idea if the piece has a lovely top that you want to showcase.  However, since water is going to be involved, consider having a piece of glass cut and mount the glass as a countertop.

If you are interested in creating a Victorian vanity, consider choosing an antique piece of furniture from that specific era.  Top the cabinet with a piece of marble and mount the sink.  If you choose to create this look, a traditional top-mounted sink is quick and easy.  Simply cut the appropriate size hole in the furniture and the countertop, drop in the sink, and seal.  For a more modern look, consider using a Empire style piece of furniture for an antique bathroom vanity with a sleek granite countertop and rustic iron fixtures.
