Antique Bathroom Vanities - Transforming Antique Furniture
Antique bathroom vanities are popping up everywhere, from magazine covers to topics of home shows. Although potentially expensive to purchase, these fantastic bath vanities can be custom made by retrofitting antique pieces of furniture to accommodate a sink or countertop. Depending on your needs and available space in your room, making antique bathroom vanities are often the easiest choice. However, before you start cutting holes in that heirloom cabinet, consider the actual fitting methods to ensure you do not ruin a perfectly good piece of furniture.
Customizing Bath Vanities
For starters, find a chest, table, or cabinet in an appropriate size to fit into your bathroom. The back of this piece will have to be removed in order to accommodate the plumbing pipes. Since the pipes must be stored in the case and travel up through the top, this next step may require some creativity. For those antique bathroom vanities made from chests or cabinets that have drawers instead of doors, the actual drawer mechanism will have to be removed. Consider removing the drawer fronts and turning them into doors so that you can keep the overall look of the piece while still having access to the storage area. It is generally easier to retrofit cabinets or chests that have doors that open, since this modification is not necessary.
Once the base of the piece has been prepared, it is time to determine how the top will be treated. One of the easiest ways to retrofit a piece is by using a top-mounted vessel sink. This type of sink is mounted straight to the top of the piece, with the faucet being mounted to the wall. Another way to include a sink is to completely remove the top and install a brand new countertop and an under mounted sink.
